A cryptarithm is a mathematical puzzle where the digits of a number are replaced by letters. The objective is to discover the original digits by deducing the unique numerical value for each letter. Typically, each letter represents a distinct digit from 0 to 9. The most common form involves an arithmetic summation, like SEND + MORE = MONEY, where each letter must be assigned a unique digit.

The core principle is to treat the letters as variables in an equation. For example, in SEND + MORE = MONEY, the letters S, E, N, D, M, O, R, Y each represent a different digit. The equation can be expanded using place values. For instance, SEND would be 1000S + 100E + 10N + D. Solving these puzzles often involves logical deduction and sometimes trial and error.

Certain rules are generally applied. The leading digit of any multi-digit number cannot be zero. For example, in SEND, S cannot be 0. This constraint is crucial for narrowing down possibilities. Cryptarithms are a popular recreational mathematics activity, encouraging problem-solving skills and logical reasoning in a playful context.
