Cryoprotektantteja is a term used to describe substances known as cryoprotectants, which are used to protect biological materials from damage caused by freezing. These agents work by modifying the behavior of water and cellular components during freezing and thawing, reducing ice crystal formation and osmotic stress, and, in some protocols, promoting a glassy, vitrified state.

Cryoprotektantteja act through two main mechanisms: penetrating (entering cells, such as dimethyl sulfoxide, glycerol, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol) and non-penetrating (primarily extracellular, such as sucrose and trehalose) agents. Penetrating cryoprotectants help replace intracellular water to lower ice formation, while non-penetrating agents increase extracellular solute concentration to promote controlled dehydration and limit ice growth on the outside of cells or tissues.

Common examples include glycerol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol, as well as sugars like sucrose and trehalose. These substances are often used in combination to balance toxicity with protective effects. Applications span cryopreservation of single cells, sperm and oocytes, embryos, tissues, and, in some cases, whole organs. They also appear in food preservation and certain biotechnological processes where freezing stabilization is required.

Practical considerations include toxicity and osmotic shock, which necessitate careful optimization of concentration, exposure time, and cooling rate. Rapid cooling can minimize ice formation but may increase chemical toxicity, while slower cooling reduces toxicity at the risk of more ice damage. After thawing, some cryoprotectants must be diluted or removed to minimize residual effects.

Terminology varies by field; cryoprotektantteja is used to refer to the class of cryoprotectants or to specific formulations within protocols.
