It captures phenomena that involve multiple nations while not belonging to any single country, and it is closely related to the English terms transnational and cross-border, though it emphasizes the national dimension as a reference frame.

Etymology and usage: The term combines cross- with nationale (national). While crossnationale is common in Dutch and Flemish discourse, English-language scholarship tends to prefer transnational or cross-national. In Dutch policy, academia, and media, crossnationale is used to discuss international cooperation, governance, research networks, and cultural exchanges that span borders.
