Crontyöajastukset refers to scheduled tasks or jobs in a Unix-like operating system environment, managed by the cron daemon. The cron system allows users to automate repetitive tasks by scheduling them to run at specific times, dates, or intervals. This is particularly useful for system administration, such as running backups, updating software, or performing routine maintenance.

The core of the cron system is the crontab file, which contains commands and their execution schedules. Each user can have their own crontab file, and system-wide cron jobs are typically managed in separate directories or files. The syntax for specifying a schedule involves five time-and-date fields: minute, hour, day of the month, month, and day of the week, followed by the command to be executed. Wildcards, lists, and ranges can be used to define more complex schedules. For example, an entry like "0 2 * * * /usr/bin/backup.sh" would execute the backup script every day at 2:00 AM.

The cron daemon continuously checks the crontab files for scheduled jobs. When a scheduled time arrives, the daemon executes the corresponding command. This automation significantly improves efficiency and reliability for regular system operations.
