Creolus

Creolus is a fictional plant genus created for worldbuilding and speculative fiction; it is not a real taxon. In the imagined biogeography of the archipelago of Thalassa, Creolus shrubs are native to misty coastal belts where sea spray and high humidity shape their adaptations. They are evergreen, typically 1–2 meters tall, with stout, flexible stems and opposite, leathery leaves that are dark green on top and lighter beneath. The inflorescences are pendulous panicles bearing small cup-shaped flowers that range in color from white to pale lilac. The fruit is a capsule that splits when mature, releasing seeds carried by the wind with papery wings.

Taxonomy: In the fictional classification, Creolus is placed in the family Creolaceae, within the order Malpighiales. The genus authority is attributed to the botanist L. I. Verdant (fictional). Major species include:

- Creolus alba: white flowers; widely grown as an ornamental in coastal gardens; noted for tolerance to wind and salt spray.

- Creolus viridis: evergreen with greenish-white flowers; more common in scrubland habitats.

- Creolus rubra: flowers with pinkish-red hues; valued for autumn blooms.

Ecology and uses: Creolus species are favored in horticulture for hardiness and fragrance. In Thalassan lore, the resinous sap is described as useful for timber sealing and as a perfumed resin. Reproduction relies on native bees and wind-dispersed seeds; in the fictional setting, climate change and habitat loss threaten their coastal ecosystems.
