Cr3C2NiCr

Cr3C2NiCr is a cermet coating consisting of chromium carbide Cr3C2 hard particles dispersed in a nickel-chromium (NiCr) alloy binder. The ceramic phase provides high hardness and wear resistance, while the ductile NiCr binder imparts toughness and corrosion resistance. The resulting composite coating combines a ceramic reinforcement with a metallic matrix, enabling protection of metal components in demanding environments.

Microstructure typically features Cr3C2 carbide grains embedded in a NiCr matrix. The coating is produced by thermal spray processes, such as high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) or plasma spray, which deposit a layered, adherent coating with some porosity depending on process parameters. The NiCr binder helps promote bonding to the substrate and improves impact resistance compared with pure carbide coatings. At elevated temperatures, chromium in the binder and carbides promotes the formation of protective oxide scales, contributing to oxidation resistance.

Applications include protective coatings for components subjected to wear and high temperatures, such as gas turbine engines, combustion chambers, valves, pumps, and downhole tools in the oil and gas industry. The coating exhibits high hardness and good wear, corrosion, and oxidation resistance, though performance depends on deposition quality and substrate preparation. Thermal cycling and improper adhesion can cause spallation or delamination.
