Cowlicks

A cowlick is a small tuft of hair that grows in a direction different from the surrounding hair, causing it to stand up, curl, or form a visible swirl. Cowlicks arise from the pattern of hair follicles and their growth direction, and are a normal variation in hair texture.

Common locations include the crown, the front hairline, and areas near the temples. They can be more noticeable at shorter hair lengths, and may appear in both children and adults. Genetics play a significant role in determining the presence and intensity of cowlicks.
