covid19pandemin is the global outbreak of illness caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. The outbreak began in late 2019 with cases in Wuhan, China. The World Health Organization declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on January 30, 2020 and a pandemic on March 11, 2020.

Transmission and symptoms: SARS-CoV-2 spreads mainly through respiratory droplets and aerosols, especially indoors. Common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, and loss of taste or smell; many infections are mild or asymptomatic. Severe disease can cause pneumonia, respiratory failure, and organ complications, with higher risk in older adults and people with underlying conditions.

Responses and vaccines: Public health measures included testing, contact tracing, isolation, masking, ventilation improvements, and travel controls. Vaccines began in late 2020, using mRNA, viral-vector, and inactivated platforms. Booster doses have been used to sustain protection, though effectiveness varies by variant. Global vaccine equity and distribution have been ongoing challenges.

Variants and surveillance: The virus evolved into variants of concern, such as Alpha, Delta, and Omicron, with Omicron spreading rapidly and showing some immune escape. Surveillance programs and genomic sequencing have guided policy and vaccine updates.

Impact and current status: The pandemic disrupted health systems, economies, education, and daily life, and contributed to long-term health effects in some people (long COVID). By 2024–2025, many countries treat COVID-19 as an endemic illness with routine vaccination and ongoing surveillance. In May 2023, the WHO announced that COVID-19 no longer constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, though the virus remains a global health issue.
