Containmentnivåer refer to the measures and procedures implemented to control the spread of hazardous materials or biological agents. These levels are established to ensure the safety of personnel, the public, and the environment. Different containment levels are assigned based on the risk posed by the specific agent or material being handled, considering its infectivity, pathogenicity, toxicity, and potential for transmission.

There are generally four distinct containment levels, each with increasing stringency. Level 1 is the most basic and applies to agents not known to cause disease in healthy adults. Standard laboratory practices are usually sufficient for containment at this level. Level 2 is used for moderate-risk agents that pose a potential hazard if inhaled, ingested, or inoculated. It requires more specialized equipment and procedures than Level 1.

Level 3 is designed for agents that can cause serious or potentially lethal disease through inhalation. This level involves more stringent controls on air handling, waste disposal, and personal protective equipment. Personnel working at Level 3 require specialized training and medical surveillance. Level 4 represents the highest level of containment and is reserved for agents that are exotic, easily transmitted, and pose a severe or fatal threat. This level involves highly specialized facilities with negative air pressure, airlocks, and rigorous decontamination protocols.

The selection of the appropriate containment level is crucial for mitigating risks associated with research, diagnostic, and production activities involving hazardous substances. Adherence to containment guidelines is a fundamental aspect of biosafety and biosecurity.
