Conrails
Conrail, officially the Consolidated Rail Corporation, was a freight-only railroad in the Northeastern United States. It was established in 1976 by the United States government through the Railroad Revitalization and Regulatory Reform Act, also known as the 4-R Act. The purpose of Conrail's creation was to combine the assets of six bankrupt or financially distressed railroads in the region: Penn Central, Erie Lackawanna, Reading Company, Central Railroad of New Jersey, Lehigh Valley Railroad, and the Ann Arbor Railroad. This consolidation aimed to create a more efficient and financially stable rail network, preventing further economic damage from the collapse of these independent carriers.
