Conductivitymake is a term that refers to the ability of a material to conduct electricity. This property is dependent on the material's atomic structure and the availability of free electrons. Materials with high conductivity, such as metals like copper and silver, have loosely bound electrons that can move freely throughout the material, allowing for the easy flow of electrical current. Conversely, materials with low conductivity, known as insulators like rubber and glass, have tightly bound electrons that are not free to move, thus resisting the flow of electricity.

The measurement of conductivity is typically expressed in units of siemens per meter (S/m). Electrical conductivity is the reciprocal of electrical resistivity, which measures how strongly a material opposes the flow of electric current. Factors such as temperature and impurities can significantly influence a material's conductivity. For instance, the conductivity of most metals decreases as temperature increases due to increased atomic vibrations hindering electron flow. In semiconductors, however, conductivity often increases with temperature as more charge carriers are activated.
