Comnenian
Comnenian refers to a Byzantine Greek noble family, the Komnenos dynasty, which ruled the Byzantine Empire from 1081 to 1185. The dynasty's most prominent ruler was Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, who ascended to the throne during a period of crisis following the Battle of Manzikert. Under the Komnenoi, the empire experienced a significant military and territorial resurgence. They successfully defended against Norman invasions and secured the borders of Anatolia and the Balkans. The reign of Manuel I Komnenos, Alexios's son, saw further military campaigns and increased diplomatic engagement with Western Europe. However, after Manuel's death, the empire entered a period of decline, culminating in the deposition of Andronikos I Komnenos, the last Komnenian emperor, in 1185. The Komnenian period is characterized by a more militarized administration and a revival of Byzantine prestige. Branches of the family also established successor states, most notably the Empire of Trebizond.
