Comendador

Comendador is a title used in medieval and early modern Iberian chivalric orders and noble contexts to designate a commander or administrator of a comenda. The term derives from Latin commendator, through Old Spanish and Portuguese, and literally refers to someone entrusted with a command.

Historically, a comenda was a grant of land, income, or a military-religious command given to a knight or noble to support the work of a religious or military order. The comendador acted as the local administrator and representative of the order, responsible for managing the estates, collecting revenues, overseeing troops or knights assigned to the command, and carrying out ceremonial and spiritual duties. In many orders, comendadores formed a tier in the command structure beneath higher officers such as grand masters. Appointments were typically made by the order’s leadership or, in some cases, by secular rulers who sponsored the command.

In modern usage, the term survives chiefly in historical descriptions and in the names of certain chivalric orders. It remains a formal title in Portuguese and Spanish, denoting a person who has been granted a comenda or who holds a rank equivalent to commander within an organization. It can also appear as a family surname.
