Cochise (c. 1810–1874) was a prominent Apache leader of the Chiricahua band who resisted Mexican and United States encroachment in the southwestern United States during the mid-19th century. Born in the Chiricahua homeland, in what is now southeastern Arizona and northern Sonora, he rose to prominence as a military and diplomatic figure during a period of intense pressure on Apache lands.
