Clitheroes

Clitheroes is a small, unincorporated community located in North Central Kansas. It is situated in Jewel County, approximately ten miles west of the town of Burr Oak and two miles north of the Nebraska state line. The area is characterized by rolling farmland, typical of the Great Plains region. Historically, Clitheroes was a farming settlement, with the earliest settlers arriving in the late 19th century. Like many rural communities in the Great Plains, Clitheroes experienced a population decline throughout the 20th century as agricultural practices evolved and younger generations moved to urban centers.

The community's name is believed to be derived from an English surname or a place name. Little remains of the original settlement, with most of the original structures having long since disappeared. The landscape is now primarily agricultural, with fields of corn, soybeans, and wheat dominating the scenery. A few scattered farmsteads represent the current inhabitants of the Clitheroes vicinity. Access to Clitheroes is via gravel county roads, with the nearest paved highway being U.S. Route 36. The nearest significant services, such as grocery stores, schools, and medical facilities, are located in nearby towns like Burr Oak and Mankato. The primary economic activity in the region continues to be agriculture, with the land supporting cattle ranching and grain production.
