Cistyyppejä, also known as cystitis, is a medical term referring to inflammation of the bladder. It is most commonly caused by a bacterial infection, particularly Escherichia coli (E. coli), which originates in the intestines. While bacterial infections are the most frequent cause, other factors can also contribute to cystitis, including certain medications, spermicides, radiation therapy to the pelvic area, and irritants like harsh soaps or bubble baths. In some cases, cystitis can occur without an identifiable cause, known as interstitial cystitis.

Symptoms of cystitis typically include a frequent and urgent need to urinate, a burning sensation during urination (dysuria), and pain or pressure in the lower abdomen or back. The urine may appear cloudy or have a strong odor, and some individuals may notice blood in their urine. In more severe cases, fever and chills can develop, indicating a potential spread of infection to the kidneys.

Diagnosis of cystitis usually involves a medical history, physical examination, and a urinalysis to detect bacteria or white blood cells. A urine culture may be performed to identify the specific type of bacteria and determine the most effective antibiotic treatment. Treatment for bacterial cystitis typically involves a course of antibiotics. For recurrent or severe cases, further investigation may be necessary to rule out underlying anatomical abnormalities or other medical conditions. Prevention strategies include drinking plenty of fluids, urinating frequently, and practicing good hygiene, especially after bowel movements.
