Ciclesonide

Ciclesonide is a medication used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis. It belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids, which work by reducing inflammation in the airways or nasal passages. It is administered as an inhaled nasal spray for allergic rhinitis and as an inhaler for asthma. Ciclesonide is a prodrug, meaning it is converted into its active form, desisobutyril ciclesonide, after it is administered. This conversion is believed to contribute to its localized action and potentially reduced systemic side effects.

For allergic rhinitis, ciclesonide helps to alleviate symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose, and nasal congestion. In asthma, it is used as a maintenance treatment to prevent and control asthma symptoms, reducing the frequency of exacerbations. It is not intended for the immediate relief of acute asthma attacks.

For the inhaler form, side effects may include hoarseness, sore throat, and oral candidiasis (thrush).
