Chortiatis

Chortiatis is a mountain and a former municipality located in the Thessaloniki regional unit of Greece. Situated southeast of the city of Thessaloniki, it is a prominent geographical feature of the region. The mountain itself is known for its natural beauty, offering hiking trails and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Historically, Chortiatis has been inhabited since ancient times, with evidence of settlements found in the area. The name "Chortiatis" is believed to derive from the Greek word for "grass" or "pasture," reflecting the mountainous landscape.

The municipality of Chortiatis, prior to its administrative merger, encompassed several villages and settlements in addition to the mountain. These settlements often had a rural character, with agriculture and animal husbandry playing a significant role in their economy. The region has also been associated with the production of local agricultural products. Following the Kallikratis program, an administrative reform in Greece, the municipality of Chortiatis was incorporated into the larger municipality of Pylaia-Chortiatis. This administrative change aimed to streamline local governance and resource management. Despite the administrative changes, the geographical area and its natural and cultural heritage continue to be recognized as Chortiatis. The mountain remains a popular destination for residents of Thessaloniki seeking respite from urban life and a connection with nature.
