Cholínesterasahemlar, also known as cholinesterase inhibitors, are a class of drugs that block the action of cholinesterase enzymes. These enzymes are responsible for breaking down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter crucial for nerve signal transmission. By inhibiting cholinesterase, these drugs increase the levels of acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft, thereby enhancing cholinergic neurotransmission.

This mechanism of action makes cholinesterase inhibitors useful in treating conditions characterized by reduced cholinergic activity. They are primarily used to manage the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, where they can improve cognitive function and memory. Additionally, they are employed in the treatment of myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disorder that affects neuromuscular junctions, by improving muscle strength. Certain types of glaucoma can also be treated with cholinesterase inhibitors to reduce intraocular pressure.

The use of cholinesterase inhibitors can lead to various side effects, often related to the overstimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system. These may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps, bradycardia (slow heart rate), and increased salivation. Dosage and individual patient response are carefully monitored to minimize adverse effects. Research continues to explore new applications and develop more selective cholinesterase inhibitors with improved safety profiles.
