Chlorotrifluoroethane

Chlorotrifluoroethane, also known as R-133a or HCFC-133a, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon with the chemical formula C2HClF3. It is a colorless gas at room temperature and pressure. Historically, it was used as a refrigerant and as a chemical intermediate in the production of other fluorocarbons. Its properties include a boiling point of -23.7 degrees Celsius and it is non-flammable.

As a hydrochlorofluorocarbon, HCFC-133a has a degree of ozone-depleting potential, although significantly lower than that of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). It also possesses a global warming potential. Due to these environmental concerns, its production and use have been phased out in many countries under international agreements like the Montreal Protocol. While its direct use has diminished, it may still be encountered as a byproduct or intermediate in certain chemical manufacturing processes. Research into its environmental fate and potential alternative applications continues.
