HCFC133a

HCFC-133a, also known as 1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon with the chemical formula C2H2ClF3. It is a colorless gas at room temperature and pressure. Historically, HCFC-133a has been used as a refrigerant, a blowing agent for foams, and a cleaning solvent.

Like other HCFCs, HCFC-133a is an ozone-depleting substance. While its ozone depletion potential (ODP) is lower than that of older chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), it is still significant. For this reason, its production and use have been subject to phase-out schedules under international agreements such as the Montreal Protocol. Many countries have already banned or severely restricted its use.

In addition to its ozone-depleting properties, HCFC-133a is also a greenhouse gas with a notable global warming potential (GWP). This characteristic further contributes to the international efforts to transition away from its use towards more environmentally friendly alternatives. Research and development have focused on finding substitutes with zero ODP and lower GWP for applications where HCFC-133a was previously employed.
