Chlorotriethylsilane

Chlorotriethylsilane, also known as triethylsilyl chloride, is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula (C2H5)3SiCl. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. This compound is a derivative of silane, where three ethyl groups and one chlorine atom are attached to the silicon atom.

Chlorotriethylsilane is primarily used as a silylating agent in organic synthesis. Silylation is a chemical reaction where a silyl group, such as the triethylsilyl group, is introduced into a molecule. This process is often employed to protect functional groups, particularly hydroxyl (-OH) and amino (-NH2) groups, during other chemical transformations. The triethylsilyl ether or amine formed is generally stable under various reaction conditions but can be readily removed when needed.

The compound can be synthesized through the reaction of silicon tetrachloride with ethylmagnesium bromide (a Grignard reagent).
