Chiusdino

Chiusdino is a commune in the province of Siena in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 60 kilometres south of Florence and about 30 kilometres west of Siena.

The territory of Chiusdino is characterized by hilly landscapes and wooded areas, typical of the Tuscan countryside. Its origins are ancient, with evidence of Etruscan settlements in the area. The medieval period marked a period of significant development for Chiusdino, especially with the foundation of the Abbey of San Galgano.

The Abbey of San Galgano is one of the most important historical and architectural landmarks in the region. Originally a Cistercian monastery, it is now renowned for its roofless nave, creating a striking open-air space. Nearby, the Montesiepi Chapel houses the legendary Sword in the Stone, associated with the knight Galgano Guidotti, who later became Saint Galgano.

The modern town of Chiusdino itself preserves a medieval urban structure, with narrow streets and stone buildings. The economy of the area is primarily based on agriculture, including olive oil and wine production, as well as tourism, drawn by the historical sites and the natural beauty of the surrounding Maremma region.
