Chignecto

Chignecto is a historical region in North America, located on the Isthmus of Chignecto, which separates the mainland of Nova Scotia from New Brunswick and the rest of Canada. The name "Chignecto" is derived from the Mi'kmaq word "Chikuniktchi," meaning "great foot," likely referring to the shape of the peninsula.

Historically, Chignecto was a strategic and contested territory, particularly during the era of Acadia and the subsequent conflicts between Britain and France. The Acadians, French settlers, established prosperous communities in the region, known for their sophisticated dykelands agriculture. The Isthmus of Chignecto was a vital land bridge connecting Nova Scotia to the mainland, making control of the area crucial for military and trade purposes.
