Chefernian

Chefernian is a term used to describe the inhabitants of Chefer, an ancient Egyptian city located on the west bank of the Nile River, near modern-day Cairo. Chefer was a significant center of worship during the Old Kingdom of Egypt, particularly known for its association with the goddess Hathor. The city was also a burial ground for several pharaohs, including Djoser, who is credited with the construction of the Step Pyramid of Djoser, one of the earliest monumental structures in ancient Egypt.

The name "Chefer" is derived from the Egyptian word "kheper," which means "to protect" or "to preserve," reflecting the city's role as a protective sanctuary for the pharaohs. The city's layout is characterized by its extensive necropolis, which includes numerous pyramids and mastaba tombs. The most notable of these is the Step Pyramid of Djoser, which was built as a tomb for the pharaoh and is considered one of the earliest examples of monumental architecture in Egypt.

Chefer's significance extends beyond its architectural achievements. The city was also a center for religious and cultural activities, with numerous temples and shrines dedicated to various deities. The temple of Hathor at Chefer was particularly important, serving as a place of worship and pilgrimage for the goddess's followers.
