Chaenocephalus is a genus of icefish belonging to the family Channichthyidae, commonly known as crocodile icefish. These fish are endemic to the Southern Ocean and are found primarily around Antarctica. A distinctive characteristic of Chaenocephalus is its lack of hemoglobin in its blood, making it the only known vertebrate to exist without this oxygen-carrying protein. Instead of hemoglobin, these fish rely on the direct diffusion of oxygen from their environment into their plasma, facilitated by the cold, oxygen-rich Antarctic waters.
