CetylStearylalkohol

CetylStearylalkohol, also known as cetostearyl alcohol, is a waxy solid mixture of fatty alcohols used in cosmetics and personal care products. It consists primarily of cetyl alcohol (C16) and stearyl alcohol (C18), with the exact ratio varying by supplier. The mixture has a melting point around 50–60°C and is insoluble in water but soluble in many organic solvents. It is produced by hydrogenating natural fats and oils such as tall oil, palm kernel oil, or coconut oil.

Applications and function: In formulations, cetyl stearyl alcohol acts as a thickener and emollient, helping to improve texture, stability, and slip. It also serves as a conditioning agent in hair care and provides a mild occlusive layer on the skin, reducing transepidermal water loss. It is commonly included in creams, lotions, balms, ointments, and various hair care products.

Safety and regulation: Cetyl stearyl alcohol is widely used in cosmetics and is generally regarded as safe when used as directed. It is typically considered non-irritating and non-sensitizing for most users. Typical usage levels range from about 0.5% to 10% depending on the product and desired viscosity.
