Ceramichandling refers to the careful and deliberate actions taken when working with ceramic objects, whether they are unfired clay, bisque, or glazed pieces. The primary goal of proper ceramichandling is to prevent damage, such as chipping, breaking, or deforming, and to maintain the integrity of the artwork or functional item.

When handling unfired clay, gentleness is paramount. Wet clay is very fragile and can easily lose its shape. It is advisable to support the piece from underneath and avoid applying pressure to thin or delicate areas. Tools like soft brushes can be used to remove dust or debris without damaging the surface. For partially dried clay, a lighter touch is still necessary, as it can be brittle.

Bisque ware, which has been fired once, is stronger than unfired clay but remains porous and susceptible to chipping. When moving bisque pieces, it is important to grip them firmly but without squeezing, ensuring support for any handles or protruding elements. Avoiding dragging bisque items across surfaces is also recommended to prevent scratches or abrasion.

Glazed ceramics are generally more durable, but the glaze itself can be prone to scratching or chipping, especially on edges and rims. Handling glazed pieces requires attention to avoid contact with abrasive materials. When stacking or storing glazed items, protective materials like felt or tissue paper should be used to prevent surfaces from scratching each other. Clean hands are also beneficial to avoid transferring oils or dirt onto the glaze, which can be difficult to remove later. Understanding the specific stage of the ceramic piece is key to employing the appropriate handling techniques.
