Centerperiferi is a concept used in social sciences, particularly in sociology and political science, to describe power dynamics and spatial relationships. It posits a fundamental division between a dominant "center" and a subordinate "periphery." The center typically represents areas of concentrated power, wealth, and influence, such as major cities, national capitals, or global economic hubs. The periphery, conversely, comprises areas that are less developed, less powerful, and often economically dependent on the center.

This model can be applied at various scales, from global economic systems to internal regional structures within a country. In a global context, developed nations might be considered the center, while developing nations form the periphery. Within a nation, the capital city and its surrounding metropolitan area could be the center, with rural or less industrialized regions constituting the periphery. The relationship between the center and periphery is characterized by flows of resources, capital, and labor, often in a way that benefits the center at the expense of the periphery. This can lead to economic inequality, social disparities, and a feeling of marginalization in peripheral areas. The concept helps to analyze uneven development and understand how power is distributed and maintained.
