Cementtikaivokset refers to a phenomenon observed in certain concrete structures where a whitish, powdery deposit forms on the surface. This deposit is primarily composed of calcium carbonate, a byproduct of a chemical reaction between calcium hydroxide in the concrete and carbon dioxide from the air. Calcium hydroxide is a soluble component of cement hydration and can migrate to the surface of the concrete. When exposed to atmospheric carbon dioxide, it reacts to form insoluble calcium carbonate.

This efflorescence is generally a surface phenomenon and does not typically indicate a structural defect in the concrete itself. However, it can be aesthetically unpleasing. The formation of cementtikaivokset is often exacerbated by the presence of moisture, as water acts as a solvent and transport medium for the calcium hydroxide. Factors like porous concrete, rapid drying, and exposure to humid environments can contribute to its development.

While cementtikaivokset is usually harmless, it can sometimes be mistaken for more serious issues like spalling or salt attack. Cleaning can be achieved through mechanical methods like brushing or scrubbing, or through the application of mild acidic solutions. However, care must be taken when using acids to avoid damaging the concrete surface. In some cases, applying a sealant to the concrete can help prevent future efflorescence by reducing moisture penetration and the migration of soluble salts.
