Cellespesialisering, also known as cell differentiation, is a fundamental biological process through which a less specialized cell becomes a more specialized cell type. This occurs multiple times during the development of a multicellular organism as it changes from a simple zygote to a complex system of tissues and cell types. All cells in an organism, with few exceptions, contain the same DNA. However, during differentiation, genes are turned on or off, leading to cells with distinct structures and functions.

The process of cell specialization is crucial for the formation of tissues and organs. For example, in humans, a fertilized egg cell (zygote) undergoes rapid division and differentiation to form various cell types such as nerve cells, muscle cells, skin cells, and blood cells. Each of these specialized cells has a unique role within the organism. For instance, nerve cells are adapted for transmitting electrical and chemical signals, while muscle cells are designed for contraction.

The mechanisms driving cell differentiation are complex and involve interactions between genes, proteins, and the cellular environment. Signaling pathways play a critical role in guiding cells along specific developmental routes. Once a cell has differentiated, it typically remains in its specialized state throughout its life. However, some specialized cells can dedifferentiate under certain conditions, or stem cells can differentiate into various cell types, highlighting a dynamic aspect of cellular biology. Understanding cell specialization is vital for research in developmental biology, regenerative medicine, and the study of diseases like cancer, where differentiation processes can be disrupted.
