Cecco

Cecco is a given name, often a diminutive of Francesco (Francis) in Italian. It has been borne by several notable individuals throughout history.

One prominent figure was Cecco d'Ascoli, born Francesco Stabili (1269–1327), an Italian poet, physician, astrologer, and mathematician. He is primarily known for his allegorical poem L'Acerba, which discussed a wide range of subjects including astronomy, meteorology, and natural philosophy. Cecco d'Ascoli also held the position of professor at the University of Bologna. However, his controversial views and teachings, particularly his astrological interpretations, led to accusations of heresy. He was eventually condemned by the Inquisition and burned at the stake in Florence.

Another notable individual was Cecco Angiolieri (c. 1260 – c. 1312), an Italian poet from Siena, often considered a contemporary and sometimes rival of Dante Alighieri. Angiolieri was known for his bawdy, satirical, and often humorous verse, which stood in contrast to the more serious and spiritual themes prevalent in much of medieval poetry. His most famous work is a sonnet cycle reflecting his turbulent life and often complaining about his wife, his mother, and his poverty. His unconventional style and subject matter made him a distinctive voice in early Italian literature.
