CdOH

CdOH refers to cadmium hydroxide. It is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Cd(OH)2. Cadmium hydroxide is a white solid that is practically insoluble in water. It can be prepared by adding a soluble hydroxide salt to a solution containing cadmium ions, such as cadmium nitrate or cadmium chloride. This results in the precipitation of Cd(OH)2.

Cadmium hydroxide is amphoteric, meaning it can react with both acids and strong bases. When it reacts with acids, it forms cadmium salts and water. For example, with sulfuric acid, it forms cadmium sulfate: Cd(OH)2 + H2SO4 -> CdSO4 + 2H2O. With strong bases like sodium hydroxide, it can form soluble hydroxocadmiate complexes.

The primary use of cadmium hydroxide is in the production of nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries. In these rechargeable batteries, cadmium hydroxide serves as the active material in the negative electrode. During discharge, it is oxidized to cadmium oxide. NiCd batteries were historically significant for their robustness and ability to deliver high current, but their use has declined due to the toxicity of cadmium and the development of alternative battery technologies like lithium-ion.

Cadmium and its compounds, including cadmium hydroxide, are toxic and are considered hazardous substances. Exposure to cadmium can lead to serious health problems, particularly affecting the kidneys and lungs. Therefore, proper handling, disposal, and regulations are crucial when dealing with cadmium hydroxide.
