Henry Cavendish (1731–1810) was a natural philosopher and experimental scientist best known for measuring the gravitational constant G and for studies in chemistry, including the discovery of hydrogen. Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle (c. 1623–1673), was a notable writer and philosopher in the 17th century. The Cavendish banana is the most widely grown dessert banana cultivar in global commerce. Cavendish cultivars are seedless, triploid, and propagated vegetatively; they include varieties such as Dwarf Cavendish and Grande Naine. The group is currently dominant in banana production but faces threats from disease, notably Tropical Race 4 Panama disease.

In science, the Cavendish experiment conducted to determine G by Henry Cavendish in the late 18th century provided the first precise measurement of the gravitational constant and allowed calculation of Earth's density.
