Cationinvaihtohartsit, often referred to as cation exchange resins, are insoluble polymeric materials that possess fixed negatively charged functional groups. These negatively charged sites are balanced by mobile, positively charged ions, known as counterions. The primary function of cation exchange resins is to exchange these mobile counterions with other cations present in a solution that comes into contact with the resin.

The structure of cation exchange resins typically consists of a cross-linked polymer backbone, commonly polystyrene divinylbenzene, to which the charged functional groups are chemically attached. The degree of cross-linking influences the resin's physical properties, such as its mechanical strength and swelling capacity. Common functional groups found in cation exchange resins include sulfonic acid groups (-SO3H) and carboxylic acid groups (-COOH), which are strong and weak acid exchangers, respectively.

When a solution containing cations is passed through a bed of cation exchange resin, cations in the solution are attracted to the negatively charged sites on the resin. These cations then displace the mobile counterions initially associated with the resin. For example, a strong acid cation exchange resin in the sodium form (Na+) can remove calcium ions (Ca2+) from hard water, exchanging them for sodium ions. The capacity of a resin, which is the total number of exchangeable sites per unit mass or volume, determines how much ion exchange can occur before the resin becomes saturated. Once saturated, the resin can be regenerated by treating it with a concentrated solution of the original counterions.

Cation exchange resins have a wide range of applications, including water softening, demineralization, purification of pharmaceuticals, separation of metals, and in chromatography. Their ability to selectively bind and release cations makes them valuable tools in various chemical and industrial processes.
