This method is widely employed in artificial intelligence, particularly in the field of case-based reasoning (CBR). In CBR, a system tackles a new problem by retrieving similar past cases from a database, adapting the solutions or knowledge from those cases, and applying them to the current situation. The effectiveness of a case-based system is heavily dependent on the quality and comprehensiveness of its case library.

The core process in case-based reasoning typically involves several steps. First, the system retrieves the most relevant past cases based on the characteristics of the current problem. Second, it assesses the similarity between the retrieved cases and the new problem. Third, it adapts the solution from the most similar case to fit the new context. Finally, the system retains the new problem and its solution as a new case in its database for future use, thus allowing the system to learn and improve over time.

Casebasiert methods are used in various applications, including customer support, medical diagnosis, legal reasoning, and design. For example, a customer service chatbot might use case-based reasoning to find solutions to common customer queries by searching a database of previous support interactions. In medicine, a diagnostic system could suggest potential illnesses by comparing a patient's symptoms to those of patients with known diagnoses. The strength of this approach lies in its ability to handle novel or unusual problems for which standard algorithms may not exist, by leveraging prior experience.
