A notable example is cartilage-associated protein (CRTAP), a gene that encodes a protein of the same name. CRTAP is part of a prolyl 3-hydroxylation complex in the endoplasmic reticulum that assists in the maturation of collagen molecules, including those important for bone and cartilage. Proper function of this complex is important for the integrity of connective tissue, and defects can disrupt collagen processing.
