Cartelização

Cartelização refers to the practice where independent companies or individuals collude to control prices, limit production, or otherwise manipulate a market. This collusion is often done in secret to avoid detection by regulatory authorities. Cartels are a form of market distortion that can lead to higher prices for consumers, reduced choice, and stifled innovation.

The primary goal of cartel members is to increase their collective profits by acting as a single monopolist. They achieve this by agreeing on specific market behaviors, such as setting minimum prices for their products or services, allocating market shares among themselves, or agreeing not to compete in certain geographic areas. This coordinated action allows them to reduce the competitive pressures that would normally drive prices down and improve efficiency.

Cartelization is illegal in most countries and is considered a serious antitrust offense. Governments and competition authorities actively investigate and prosecute cartels to protect consumers and maintain fair market competition. Penalties for cartel involvement can include substantial fines and, in some jurisdictions, imprisonment for individuals involved. Detecting cartels can be challenging due to their clandestine nature, but sophisticated investigative techniques are employed to uncover such agreements.
