Carpometacarpalis

Carpometacarpalis refers to the carpal and metacarpal bones of the human wrist and hand. The carpal bones make up the wrist, while the metacarpal bones form the majority of the hand's length. The carpal bones are located proximally, closer to the forearm, and the metacarpal bones are distally, farther from the forearm.

The carpal bones are divided into two groups: proximal and distal. The proximal row consists of the scaphoid, lunate, and triquetrum bones, while the distal row is made up of the pisiform, trapezium, trapezoid, and capitate bones. The metacarpal bones, on the other hand, are five in number and are attached to the proximal row of carpal bones.

The carpometacarpalis region is crucial for hand movement and function. The joint surfaces of the carpal and metacarpal bones articulate with each other, allowing for movement and flexibility of the hand. Any irregularities or injuries in this region can lead to issues such as limited mobility, pain, and strain on adjacent joints.

Several conditions and injuries can affect the carpometacarpalis region. Fractures of the metacarpal or carpal bones can cause pain and limited range of motion. Repetitive strain injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, can also affect the carpometacarpalis region. In addition, certain systemic conditions, like osteoarthritis, can cause changes to the joint surfaces and surrounding soft tissues, leading to further complications and reduced function. Treatment often involves rest, immobilization, and rehabilitation to minimize scarring and promote healing.
