Carpinarius

Carpinarius is a Latin-derived taxonomic name that has appeared in various biological contexts but does not correspond to a currently recognized, valid genus in contemporary classifications. In some historical botanical writings, Carpinarius was proposed as a genus intended to group hornbeam-related plants within the birch family (Betulaceae). The term is derived from carpinus, the genus name for hornbeams, with the suffix -arius indicating belonging or association. In practice, the species that might have been placed under such a genus were later reclassified into the established genera Carpinus and Ostrya, and the proposal did not become an accepted taxon in major flora treatments.

In zoological or mycological usage, Carpinarius has appeared inconsistently as a proposed genus epithet or as a provisional label in early descriptions, but again it has not gained standing as a valid, current name under the rules of nomenclature. Because taxonomic names can be reused or repurposed across kingdoms, some authors may encounter Carpinarius in historical notes or in discussions of nomenclatural confusion, rather than as an active taxon.

Today, Carpinarius is mainly of scholarly interest to historians of taxonomy and to collectors of nomenclatural trivia. Contemporary databases of plant and animal taxonomy do not list Carpinarius as a recognized genus, and the term is typically treated as obsolete or ambiguous.
