Cariñena

Cariñena is a town and municipality in the province of Zaragoza, within the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain. It serves as the capital of the Campo de Cariñena comarca and lies in the Ebro valley, in a viticulture-rich part of the region.

The economy of Cariñena and its surroundings is dominated by wine production. The Campo de Cariñena area is associated with the Denominación de Origen Cariñena, which covers wines produced from local grape varieties and blends with Garnacha.

The name Cariñena also designates a red grape variety widely grown in the region. Internationally known as Carignan in French-speaking areas and Mazuelo in some regions, the Cariñena grape is frequently used in blends and is a defining component of many local wines.

Historically, the town preserves traditional Aragonese architecture and hosts cultural events tied to the wine harvest and local traditions.
