Carbocationmediated refers to a chemical reaction mechanism that proceeds through the formation of a carbocation intermediate. A carbocation is a molecular species containing a positively charged carbon atom, which is typically electron-deficient and highly reactive. These intermediates are often transient species that quickly undergo further reactions to achieve a more stable electronic configuration. The formation of a carbocation usually involves the heterolytic cleavage of a chemical bond, where one atom retains both electrons and the other departs with none, leaving a positive charge on the carbon. This can occur, for example, when a leaving group departs from a carbon atom, taking its bonding electrons with it.

The stability of a carbocation is a critical factor in determining the feasibility and rate of a carbocationmediated reaction. Tertiary carbocations are generally more stable than secondary, which are more stable than primary, due to the electron-donating inductive effect of alkyl groups and hyperconjugation. The positively charged carbon atom can be stabilized by adjacent electron-donating groups, which delocalize the positive charge.
