Cannabinoid-producing refers to the biological process by which plants, primarily within the Cannabaceae family, synthesize cannabinoids—chemical compounds that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. The most well-known cannabinoid-producing plant is *Cannabis sativa*, which contains over 100 identified cannabinoids, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). These compounds are produced through a series of enzymatic reactions in specialized glandular structures called trichomes, which cover the plant’s flowers, leaves, and stems.

The biosynthesis of cannabinoids begins with the amino acid phenylalanine, which is converted into cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), often referred to as the "mother cannabinoid." CBGA then serves as a precursor for three primary cannabinoids: THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid), CBDA (cannabidiolic acid), and CBCA (cannabichromenic acid). Through enzymatic processes, these acids undergo decarboxylation—typically triggered by heat, light, or aging—converting them into their active forms (THC, CBD, and CBC, respectively).

Other cannabinoid-producing plants include *Humulus lupulus* (hops), which contains cannabinoid-like compounds such as cannabichromene (CBC) and cannabigerol (CBG), though in much lower concentrations. Research into cannabinoid production has expanded beyond *Cannabis*, exploring synthetic biology techniques to engineer microbes or fungi for cannabinoid synthesis, potentially offering sustainable alternatives to traditional plant-based extraction.

Understanding cannabinoid production is crucial for breeding strains with specific therapeutic or recreational properties, optimizing cultivation practices, and developing synthetic or semi-synthetic cannabinoids for medical use. Advances in genetic and metabolic engineering continue to refine our ability to manipulate cannabinoid synthesis for both scientific and industrial applications.
