Calibration activities may include checking linearity, monitoring drift, and evaluating measurement uncertainty. Validation activities may encompass method validation, assessments of accuracy and precision, limits of detection and quantitation, robustness, and reproducibility. The two processes are distinct but complementary: calibration ensures measurements reflect true values, while validation confirms that the measurement process is appropriate for its purpose.

In data science and predictive analytics, calibration refers to aligning predicted probabilities with observed frequencies, with validation performed on independent data. Tools include calibration plots, reliability diagrams, Brier scores, and, when needed, adjustments by isotonic regression or Platt scaling. External validation analyzes generalization to new data.
