CaSrO

CaSrO, or calcium strontium oxide, is a binary oxide that contains calcium, strontium, and oxygen with the approximate formula CaSrO. In practice it is usually considered a mixed oxide or solid solution in the CaO–SrO system, where calcium and strontium cations can substitute for each other on a common lattice.

Structure and composition

Both CaO and SrO typically crystallize in the rock-salt (NaCl) structure. CaSrO is expected to form a substitutional solid solution within this framework, with the cation sublattice accommodating Ca2+ and Sr2+ in varying ratios. The lattice parameter tends to interpolate between the end members, increasing with higher Sr content due to the larger ionic radius of Sr2+. The extent of solid-solution behavior can depend on temperature and processing conditions, and complete miscibility is often observed at elevated temperatures.

Synthesis and processing

CaSrO can be prepared by high-temperature solid-state reactions using CaO and SrO or their carbonate precursors (CaCO3 and SrCO3), followed by calcination in dry air or inert atmosphere to form the oxide solid solution. Thorough mixing and controlled heating are important to promote homogeneous distribution of the two cations.

Properties and applications

CaSrO is a high-melting, highly basic oxide. Like CaO and SrO, it reacts with water to form corresponding hydroxides, a reaction that releases heat and requires careful handling in dry conditions. Its properties—such as a tunable lattice parameter and potential for solid-solution strengthening—make it of interest in ceramic and refractory applications, and it may be explored for use in ceramic electrolytes or catalytic materials where alkaline-earth oxides are relevant. However, CaSrO is not widely used as a commercial material, and research focus remains on fundamental solid-state behavior and potential technological applications.
