Ca2homeostase refers to the biological regulation of calcium ion (Ca2+) concentrations within a living organism. Calcium is a vital mineral that plays crucial roles in numerous physiological processes, including nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, blood clotting, and bone structure. Maintaining calcium levels within a narrow physiological range is essential for proper cellular function and overall health.

The body employs a sophisticated system of hormonal and cellular mechanisms to achieve calcium homeostasis. Key hormones involved include parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitonin, and vitamin D. Parathyroid hormone, secreted by the parathyroid glands, is released when blood calcium levels drop too low. PTH acts on the bones, kidneys, and intestines to increase calcium absorption and release from storage. Calcitonin, produced by the thyroid gland, has the opposite effect, lowering blood calcium levels when they become too high by inhibiting bone resorption and promoting calcium excretion by the kidneys. Vitamin D, obtained from sunlight exposure or diet, is crucial for facilitating calcium absorption from the intestines.

Disruptions in calcium homeostasis can lead to various health problems. Hypocalcemia, characterized by low blood calcium levels, can cause muscle cramps, tetany, and neurological symptoms. Hypercalcemia, or elevated blood calcium, can result in kidney stones, bone pain, and cardiovascular issues. Therefore, the precise regulation of calcium ions is a critical aspect of maintaining physiological balance and preventing disease.
