Ca2CaMaktivaatioon refers to the process of calcium-calmodulin activation. Calmodulin (CaM) is a ubiquitous, multi-functional calcium-binding messenger protein found in all eukaryotic cells. It plays a critical role in signal transduction, acting as a molecular switch that relays signals from the cell membrane to intracellular targets.

The activation of calmodulin by calcium ions (Ca2+) is a fundamental biological event. In its inactive state, calmodulin has a low affinity for calcium and exists in a compact conformation. When intracellular calcium levels rise, typically in response to external stimuli like neurotransmitter binding or hormonal signals, calcium ions bind to specific sites on calmodulin. This binding causes a conformational change in calmodulin, opening it up and exposing hydrophobic patches on its surface.

This calcium-bound, activated form of calmodulin then interacts with a wide array of target proteins. These target proteins are often enzymes, ion channels, or transcription factors. The interaction of Ca2+-calmodulin with these targets modulates their activity, thereby influencing a vast range of cellular processes. These processes include muscle contraction, neurotransmitter release, gene expression, cell motility, and many others. The specificity of calmodulin's action is achieved through its interaction with different target proteins in different cellular contexts. Once the calcium signal subsides, calcium ions dissociate from calmodulin, causing it to return to its inactive state and dissociate from its targets, thus terminating the signal.
