CYP21A1P

CYP21A1P is a pseudogene located on human chromosome 6. It is a highly homologous sequence to the functional gene CYP21A1, which encodes the enzyme 21-hydroxylase. This enzyme is crucial for the synthesis of steroid hormones in the adrenal glands. The CYP21A1P gene is a result of duplication of the CYP21A1 gene and has accumulated mutations that render it non-functional.

Despite being a pseudogene, CYP21A1P plays a significant role in the evolution and function of the CYP21A1 gene. Gene conversion events, where genetic material is exchanged between the two genes, can lead to the transfer of functional sequences from CYP21A1P back to CYP21A1. This process can repair mutations in the functional gene and is thought to have helped maintain the integrity of CYP21A1 over evolutionary time.

Conversely, gene conversion can also transfer non-functional sequences from CYP21A1P to CYP21A1, resulting in mutations in the functional gene. Many cases of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a group of genetic disorders affecting steroid hormone production, are caused by mutations in the CYP21A1 gene that are believed to have arisen through such gene conversion events with CYP21A1P. Therefore, CYP21A1P is not merely a silent relic but an active participant in the dynamics of the CYP21A1 gene.
