C:\Users is the default location for user profiles on Windows operating systems. For each local account, Windows creates a folder under C:\Users named after the account, containing the user’s personal data and settings. The path may vary on custom installations or with nonstandard drives, but C:\Users is the standard convention on contemporary Windows versions.

Inside a user profile are commonly used folders such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Favorites, which hold the corresponding user files. A hidden AppData folder stores application settings and data; it consists of Local, LocalLow, and Roaming subfolders used by different programs. Some profiles also include Saved Games, Contacts, and a Links folder, while cloud-integrated folders (for example, OneDrive) may redirect or mirror certain locations.

The profile functions as the user’s personal workspace and stores personalization settings, recent items, per-user preferences, and application data. On domain-joined or enterprise devices, Windows can use roaming profiles or modern alternatives to keep a user’s data consistent across machines, though local profiles remain common offline. The Default profile serves as the template used when creating new local accounts; the Default User (and, in some versions, a copy named Default) is placed in the same directory to seed the new profile.

Security and access to C:\Users is controlled through NTFS permissions. The owner has full control, while administrators may access the folder for maintenance, and some subfolders (such as AppData) are hidden. Users should avoid manual deletion of their profile folders to prevent data loss; profile management is generally handled by the operating system or IT administrators.
