CTXM25

CTXM25 is a strain of the bacterium *Chlamydia trachomatis*. This bacterium is an obligate intracellular parasite, meaning it can only reproduce inside living host cells. *Chlamydia trachomatis* is a significant human pathogen, responsible for a range of infections.

The CTXM25 strain is one of many serovars, or distinct strains, of *Chlamydia trachomatis*. These serovars are differentiated based on variations in their outer membrane proteins. Different serovars can cause different clinical manifestations, although there is considerable overlap. Infections caused by *Chlamydia trachomatis*, including those attributed to the CTXM25 strain, are commonly transmitted through sexual contact.

Infections typically affect the urogenital tract, rectum, and throat. In women, untreated infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can result in infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain. In men, it can cause urethritis and epididymitis, also potentially leading to fertility issues. *Chlamydia trachomatis* can also cause trachoma, a leading cause of preventable blindness, primarily in developing countries, though serovars associated with trachoma are typically distinct from those causing genital infections. Diagnosis is usually made through nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs). Treatment typically involves antibiotics. Public health efforts focus on screening and partner notification to prevent further spread and complications.
